HONOLULU PROSPEROUS.
FINE CANNING SEASON.
MEAT FROM NEW ZEALAND. After a most enjoy Ale holiday at Honolulu Mr. David Carter, manager of the Union Steamship Company at Auckland, returned this ■ morning by the Niagara. He .was accompanied by Mrs.. .Carter. flourishing and just as delightful a holiday ground as ever. The pineapple caimingseason, one of the mainstays of the Islands, was now in full swing, the crop was a good one, and everyone was in great heart. Pineapple canning time is a great time for the Hawaii school children. The schools closed.during the first week in June, and thousands of fhe youngsters find jobs in the canning factories. Asked -what he thought of the chances of the industry being established in Fiji Mr. Carter said the group was very suited to the' cMltfvktipn' of pines, but he was doubtful about the markets. Heavy tariff would, of course, shut the American market; in New Zealand they would have to compete with the Honolulu produce, and in Australia they would have to compete with Singapore, which was a great pineapple-exporting place. Mr. Carter, speaking about trade between New Zealand and Honolulu, said the contract for supplying frozen meat for the American army of some 24,000 men stationed there had been secured by New Zealand, and that meant about 900 tons ot meat a year.
