MORE GAS FOR DEVONPORT.

NEW GASOMETER UNDER CONSTRUCTION , . ' In order to cope with the increased demand for gas in Devonport, Takapuna and the surrounding districts, the Auckland Gas Company are building a new gasometer on the old site at Devonport. Tlie construction lias been rendrred somewhot difficult owing to the muddy nature of the land and the building of a clay wall and the installation of a pump has been necessary to drain : the area. The work was commenced last 1 February, and it is expected that it will ■tie completed in about fifteen months. The old gasometer has a, capacity of ; 140,000 cubic feet, but so great is the present demand that it has to be filled three times a day. The new gasometer will have a diameter of 120 feet and a depth of 31 feet, and will have a capacity of 600,000 cubic feet. It will be necessary, in the construction, to excavate 8000 cubic yards of earth, while about 2800 cubic yards of reinforced concrete and over 220 tons of steel will be used. The standards will be 01 feet !in height above the concrete structure, ; nnd the gasometer will be such that the capacity may be still further increased to 000,000 cubic feet, so that eventually the two gasometers will have a total capacity of 1,040.000 cubic feet.
