THE NEED FOR FRIENDSHIP.

SIR HARRY LATJDER'S PLEA. THE MISSION" OF ROTARY. Sir Harrj Lander, introduced as a devoted R.i!ar!.S*i. was the guest of the Auckland lln'.irv Club at the luncheon in the 'i'mvii Hall supper room. There was a crowded attendance, practicaljy every intere-t in the community beins represented. Rotarian tlip Hnn. Ocorge Fowlds, in Scottish vernacular, declared ho had been a Glasgow •• keelie." in his boyhood days, and said he diii his " coortin* " in the West End Park ilicre. He asked Sir Harry Lauder to take a " braw silk Union Jack" to the Glasgow Rotarinns from the Auckland Roiarians. Sir Harry Lauder said he would be pleased to deliver the Mag. In an interesting and inspiring address on Friendship. Sir Harry said the turmoil in the world to-day was caused because men did not understand one another. Many people pot excited over little tilings that did not matter, instead of paying attention to the realities of life—Cod, work, home, and a kindly neighbour over the garden wall. And he asked them to spread that friendship beyond the garden wall. It should spread to all nations. He believed that Rotary was going to be one of the great factors of the League of Nations. "There is something tragically wrong," continued Sir Harry, "when we find men prepared to devote their intelligence to the construction of hellish war machinery after all we have gone through. If we have not yet learned the lesson of the groat turmoil through which we have gone then we arc not yet sane." He asked the Rotarians to btiild up the friendship of the world. Personally he would rather build friendships than battleships. (Applause). The salvation of humanity lay hi the unity of the British Empire. But the rest of the world did not know that w-e wanted them to be friendly -with us. They talked about us and not with us. They could not know that' we were their iriends unless we let them hear about it. (Applause).
