WORLD'S SUGAR CROP.

THE CUBAN SHORTAGE. At the end of December last Cuba had only 8500 tons o£ old crop sugar on hand, a tremendous decrease from the 1,200,000 tons at the end of 1921. Thia means that with her record crop of 4,000,000 tons Cuba disposed of 5,200,000 tons of sugar during 1922. The distribution was effected through the exportation of over 4,000,000 tons to the United States, somp 850,000 tons of which (in terms of raw sugar) went to Europe after refining. Another shipment of 850,000 tons went direct from Cuba and made in all 1,700,000 tons towards Europe's deficit of 2,300,000 tons. Practically all the remainder was procured from Java. The 3,000,000 tons of Cuban sugar that was left in North America, combined with the production of the United States and her possessions, was just sufficient to supply the United States record consumption of nearly 5.500,000 tone (raw sugar.) This year has started well with the promise of another 4,000,000 ton sugar crop in Cuba: with a crop of above average in Java, and a greatly increased production of beet sugar in Europe. In spite of this promising outlook decreases in other parts of the world, notably in the cane regions of the United States, have brought the world's production only 125,000 tons higher than it was last year to supply consumption needs estimated at 350,000 tons more than in 1022, and 725,000 tons larger than production.
