The- first application under section 2 of the Arbitration Amendment Act, 1922, will shortly be heard in Wellington, the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners having cited over 2000 employers in a demand for a Dominion award for a period of two years. Provision was made in the amendment of last year for a simpler method ot obtaining Dominion awards, whereas the claims are referred to the Arbitration .ourt after formal sitting of a Conciliation Council and representing the whole of New Zealand. The principal claims are for a 40-Hour week, to be worked on five days, and a wage of fo 10/, casuals engaged for less than a week to be paid at the rate of 3/ per hour. An extra allowance of 10/ per week is asked for workers who are in charge of jobs. Double-time rates are sought for overtime worked. It is desired that the apprentices should receive 30 per cent of a journeyman's ■wage for the first six months, up to 90 per cent for the last six months; also that an examination be made every six months to ascertain whether an inereiie in apprentices' wages is justifiable. Other clauses relating to apprentices are on the same lines as proposals in the Apprentices Bill. There _re tie usual detailed clauses respecting holidays, preference, etc.
