GREAT SOUTH ROAD.

DISCOMFORT TO PEDESTRIANS TRAPS FOR THE \'l. The future promises to tl|pM*t"ideiit.s along the Great South Koa^, l « fc l " concrete roadway and well-form«£3J?/paths, hut a certain amount of discomfort has to be undergone at present before this can be attained. Extensive alteration to the thoroughfare has entailed the cutting up of the footpaths for*relaying the gas pipes and scooping out trenches in the roadway for the concrete pavement and the tramway bed in the middle. The result is that, the route from Market Road to the Harp of Erin has numerous traps for the unwary that become doubly discomforting at night. Below Market Road the rains have left the footpath in a, very boggy state, and more than one pedestrian in endeavouring to pick his way by the row of hurricane lamps has stepped unwittingly into a mudhole. At the bottom of Fanner's Hill the. new alignment of the road has caused a bulwark to.be raised, which encroaches on the footpath, leaving a space of only a few feet, in which pedestrians have to sidle past each other with mumbled apologies and care that they do not leave the beaten track. The worst places, however, are a lake of mud at the corner of the Great South Road and the newlyformed street in the Nolan estate. Heavy motor vehicles in passing cause this mud to spurt in all directions, and woe betide the man who happens to be in the vicinity. Work on the road has still some months to go before completion, and, with winter only getting into stride, the state of the thoroughfare is not likely to be improved for some time yet.
