'i■ « ■ Mr. and Mrs. J. B. MacEwan, of Wellington, are at the Grand Hotel. Colonel R. ('. Allen, of Morrinsville, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at the Northern el'lub. Mr. and Mrs. John Duthie, of Wellington, who are visitors to Auckland, are at "Cargen." Dr. Izard, of Wellington, motored through from Dargaville to-day. He is at the Grand Hotel. Mr. Wl T. A. Longhurst has been appointed to H.M.s. Philomel as probationary schoolmaster in place of Mr. William Randall, resigned. Mr. Cecil Marks, New Zealand representative for United Artists' Corporation, is on a visit to Auckland. Dr. R. J. R. Mecredy has arrived in Auckland from Dunedin to take up the position of schpol medical officer in place of Dr. H. A. Davies, who has left for South Africa. The Hon. J. 0. Coates (Minister of Public Works) arrived in Auckland to-day by car from the North. This afternoon he performed the opening ceremony in connection with the big new dam at Nihotupu. Air. Hjeaton L. yon Stunner, of the legal staff of the Public Trust Office, and a son of the late Judge yon : Stunner, of the Native Land Court, was to-day admitted as a solicitor of the ' Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Stringer, on the motion of Mr. E. Blakey. Mr. E. P. Neale, M.A., LL.B.. 8.C0m., assistant to Professor Murphy, Professor J of Economics at Victoria University l_oij lege, has received advice by cable that lie , I has been awarded the degree of Doctur !of Science for his thesis on the "Demo- , graphy of New Zealand," a treatise on tlie vital statistics of t"ie Dominion.. Dr. , Neale was educated at the Otago Boys' High School, and is a graduate of both Otago University and Victoria College. Captain John Taylor Marshall, late of 1 the 2nd Dragoon Guards, with which rcgi- ; ment he served in India, died in Wellng- . I ton on Wednesday. He was a son of . Captain James Marshall, of the Innis- ' killing Dragoons. Arriving in New Zealand in 1860, he joined the Armed Constabulary, and later commanded Nelson Military District. Subsequently lie saw service in the South African war. He leaves a widow and one son and five . daughters. [ _______--
