— •—-_. -..—.. — MOUNT ALBERT MAYORALTY. ADDRESSES BY CANDIDATES.. Addresses were given on Thursday evening by two candidates for the Mayoralty of Mount Albert. Mr. R. E. Matthews, speaking at St. Enoch's Presbyterian Hall, Momingside, paid a high tribute to the retiring ! Mayor,. Mr. A. F. Bennett, whom he ■ said during his two years of office had . probably done more than any previous Mayor for the progress of the district. Mr. Bennett was a lawyer, and he , thought that a lawyer was best fitted ,to push on the work. The candidate expressed satisfaction with the prospect , of the speedy erection of the Kingsland • overhead bridge and the early extension 'of the tram service to Edendale. The ' latter it was expected would mean a 1 large increase in the population of the ' district, and that would be an enormous i benefit to the finances of the borough. • After answering a number of questions : the candidate was accorded a unani- , mous vote of confidence. The candida- ■ ture of Mr. Matthews is supported by , the Mount Albert Ratepayers' and Resi- [ dents' Progressive Association, which is , also supporting Messrs. G. R. Metcalfe and J. Murray as councillors. At the Presbyterian Hall, Edendale 1 Mr. L. E. Rhodes, also a candidate for 1 the Mayoralty, and a member of the present Mount Albert Council, addressed •. a well attended meeting. He stressed ■ the necessity for a progressive policy based on sound business lines. He 1 claimed that his business experience had brought him in touch with work similar I to that the Mayor was called upon to • do. He advocated an efficient water j I supply, drainage extension and the! - pushing on of the trams to Edendale and 1 beyond the present terminus. There was - need for an electric lighting system and . a street improvement scheme. He was , in favour of concreting as a permanent f roading, but did not support the cons creting of the main Edendale Road until . necessary work had been completed in the side streets. He proposed the establishment of a board to control the water supply, with scope similar to that of the Electric Power Board. The candi- [ date was accorded a vote of thanks and l confidence. H ~ r |. MOUNT EDEN CONTEST. . ' Mr. .T. L. A. Kayll addressed an enthusiastic meeting in the Dominion Road ' Methodist Hall on Thursday in support | of his candidature for the Mayoralty of Mount Eden. Mr. Kayll denied that he was influenced by a religious institu- • tion. He was an independent candidate supported by the Mount Eden Ratepayers' Association. He thought that fc the two main roads —Mount Eden and 1 Dominion Road—should be laid down in - some permanent form as soon as posl sible, and that the patch-work should be - discarded. The unfinished roads should > be completed as early as possible; also ; the sewerage system. Valuations should , be made on a proper system by an ex- | pert so as to secure equitable results. _ The meeting concluded with a vote of confidence. ONEHUNGA MAYORAL ELECTION. In advocacy of his candidature for the mayoral chair, Mr. A. A. Creamer addressed meetings on Thursday night at Beresford Park and last night at the Royal Oak. Both meetings were very well attended and an excellent interest manifested. After answering questions the candidate was tendered votes ol thanks and assurances- of supuort. Mr, • Creamer continues his campaign on Monday at Te Papapa School and Thursday in the Foresters' Hall. BIRKENHEAD. There are now signs of activity in progress in connection with the Mayoral and- Council elections »t Birkenhead. Messrs. Alfred Bartlett and E. C AValton, both of whom have been members |of the Borough Council for many years, I are candidates for the Mayoralty, and a good contest is anticipated. I For the Council it is understood that Messrs. Albert Hadfield, P. H. Hayward, L. R. L. Moller (members of the present Council), E. G. Skeates, C. E. Campbell, A. E. Wood (who have served on former Councils), F. A. Gilpin, Fred Pugh, Ifred 'Andersen, Geo. Pugh, D. McClymfpnt, Win. Worthington, and Thos. Farrell will be candidates, though this may not cxi haust the list, while a "Labour ticket" ' is also mooted as a probability, which may include a candidate for the Mayoralty. NORTHCOTE. The present members of the Northcote , Borough Council, including the Mayor, Mr. W. E. Richardson, are seeking reelection. Though no other candidate is yet definitely announced, it is understood efforts are being made to induce Mr. John Potter, president of tRe Waitemata Bowling Club, to accept nomination as Mayor. Mr. C. A. Deuxberry, who corttested the office at the last election with the present occupant, is also looked upon as a probable candidate. In ) the event of either gentlemen standing, - it is understood a number of additional . candidates will be offering from men i engaged in business. Candidates representative of Labour are also in the field, - though a full "ticket" is not likely. The ; test questions of the- election will be • the judicious expenditure of the drain- ; aa-e loan, and co-operation in the oppol sition to the Quay Street railway at the • Ferry Building's crossing-, and in resistin? any movement to shift the location of the ferries' city berthage, or further encroachment thereon. It is also pointed out that in view of recent developments regarding the water simply, the representation on the Lake Takapuna Board _ of Control is of the utmost importance. _I As only members of tlie Borough Coun,'oil are eligible for anoointment to this !ibodv, it is contended this is another P reason why the most capable administra- [ tors should be elected" to the Council, i.
