SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
FADDON-HADFTELD HATCH. ABOUT MIDDLE OP JUNE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, this day. The latest "Sydney Referee" to hand states that the Paddon-Htidfield match for the sculling championship of the world will probably mc rowed at the end of May. Such an early date is not likely to be acceptable to Hadfield's supporters, who have planned for the challenger to leave for Australia about the end of this month, and they reckon it imperative for Hadfield to have at least six weeks' training on the other side under the supervision of George Towns before the race takes place. It is not anticipated that Jim Paddon will raise any objections to rowing about the middle of June. In bis letters to Wanganui friends, Paddon appears to be very pleased indeed to have received the challenge, as he was beginning to fear he waa not going to get A match with anyone until he waa well on the downward grade. From all accounts there is no likelihood of Paddon agreeing to row anywhere but on the Richmond River, in which district most of his supporters live, and he promised them before coming to New Zealand last year that in the event of winning the title he would defend it on the Richmond. George Towns, who knows the South Woodburn course, says it is a good one, and it should not take long for Hadfield to learn all there is to learn. Hadfield was to have arrived in Wanganui this week, but has been detained in Auckland owing to illness in his family. He expects to reach Wanganui early next week, to fix iip alt arrangements with the committee here and have a few rows on the river before leaving for Australia.
