AUSTRALIA'S PROSPECTS.

Australia has drawn Hawaii in the first round of the Davis Cup series. As a member of the Australian Davis Cup team in 1921 and 1922, I had_ the opportunity of meeting in an exhibition match the leading players in Honolulu, and our team had very little trouble in defeating them. The outstanding players were Castle, Ekland, and Balthis. I should be inclineto think that Australia will win the first round. It is a pity that Australia did hot draw Japan instead of Hawaii, as a visit from the Japanese stars would be a big draw for Australian tennis enthusiasts. It is hardly likely that we can expect to get the Japanese players out here now, as they have been drawn against Canada, and it is almost certain that the match will take place in the latter country. It would be a great asset to have Norman Brookes go as manager and captain of our team, whether a strong or weak one be sent. At present the prospects of sending our best are anything but bright; but it is to be hoped that our strongest team will be in the field.

In my opinion our chances of lifting the cup this year are better than they have been for some time. In spite of shortcomings our team did remarkably well in the challenge round last year, and with the help and experience of the suggested captain should go even closer to victory.
