EDUCATION IN SAMOA.

Colonel Tate, ex-Administrator at Samoa, l- who returned to Auckland by the Navua te this morning, was agriculture in the >r| Samoan Group. ie| Colonel Tate said that the number of i, pupils attending the Government schools t at Apia had steadily increased during n the past three years, as the following r figures will show:—Roll No., December, ie 1920, 197; 1921, 298, and 1922, 431. It ie was not altogether through these Govd eminent schools, however, that the Ad- , v ministration hoped that the general edu,'d cation of the Samoans would be influls enced. Except in so far as the section ,d devoted to the education of European )r children was concerned, the Government ; s schools merely served as models for the -,f pastor teachers of the native village ls schools to follow. It was by means of ]t the native village schools, which were c . i.nder the control of the various mi>- ._ sions, that the education of the Samoan ' children generally must be achieved. Therefore, the aim of the Superintendent ~ of Schools was to afford all passible . assistance and encouragement to the . ' pastor teachers, and to co-ordinate the work in the village schools. The policy would be to give ever-increasing a.sis- „ tance in this direction. l . It was recognised, however, that more "'* advanced education could not be given ~in these village schools. Thi- was 1 neccs.-arily so at present, as these schools ■*' | were taught entirely by native teacher-. So the Government had established what I were known as District 'Schools, the 5 ' pupils for which were selected by examinaI tion from the village or mission -chools. Provision for still higher education had , c : been made by means of scholarships enr . aling the winner to undergo a further ■-j . course of study, and six Samoan boys ,] i were already attending St. Stephen's ,_ i School, Auckland, as the holders of such l_ | scholarships. t ==_______===
