Hunt, who was present by invitation at a meeting of the Canterbury Sheepowners' I'nion. read a paper advocating abolition of i.lie graduated income tax on companies as nl present levied. The matter was fully discussed. several members expressing the opinion that it would lie to the advantage of the general community if company taxation could be. reduced! but that the first and primary necessity was the removal of the, super land t.ix still remaining. and a substantial reduction in land tax. Mr. 11. I). Acklnnd moved: "That this executive cannot support Mr. Hunt in advocating abolition of the graduated income tax on companies, us it is of opinion that direct relief to producers through remission of bind tax should lie the first consideration with the Government, as no other section of the community pays this tax. which is the only capital tax levied in the Dominion: thai Lhe Government he urged to endeavour to reduce unimproved values of land for taxation purposes, as there can be no justification for increasing unimproved values of land used for purposes nf production by U0 per cent since l!i|l." The motion was carried.
