THE PLUNKET SHIELD.
WON BT CANTERBURY.
MARGIN OF 114 RUNS. (By Telegraph.—Tress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The Plunket Shield match. Wellington v. Canterbury, was concluded to-day. Rain fell during the morning, and showers falling at intervals delayed the play until 4.25 p.m. The surface of the wicket was slippery, but fairly firm. A pood supply of sawdust enabled the bowlers to get a fair foothold. Play lasted 25 minutes, and Canterbury won a memorable match by 114 runs.
Collins and Hutch'ings resumed for Wellington. Any hope Wellington had of winning was soon shattered, for Cunningham, with his third ball, clean bowled Collins, 161—5—4(5. Condliffe followed, but after scoring five lifted one from Read to forward short-leg, where Newman brought off a fine catch. 166 —»—5. Henderson opened with a single to leg. He then played a maiden from Read. Three singles came from Cunningham's next over, 170 going on the board. A single came off Read, but the second ball of Cunningham's next over knocked Hutcbings' leg stump clean out of the ground. Scores:— CANTERBURY. First innings 225 Second innings 432 WELLINGTON.
