TELEPHONE RATES.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l was quite interested in the letter by "Civis" drawing attention to the apparent lack of interest in the above subject on the part of members of our local Chamber of Commer-ce. Most of the members of the Chamber are, I suppose, representatives of fairly large mercantile houses, to which the proposed increase in telephone rates would be ns a drop in the bucket, even though they may have to pay the proposed increased rates on a dozen telephones. Surely these gentlemen are expected to legislate for the small men as well as the big houses, Some of us who are just struggling to kee_> our heads above water, and to whom the telephone is a necessity, should have a say in this matter, and I quite conour with the idea suggested toy "Civis" that a meeting of subscribers he called and a committee set Up to go into the whole question of the running of the department. There are other matters in connection with our telephone department which require investigation, and these, too, could be referred to the committee. 1 certainly think that we ought to pay for the telephone according to the use made of it. Why should one subscriber have to pay for £9 worth of telephone while he uses "only £S worth, and why should another subscriber be allowed to use £18 worth of telephone while he pays only £9?— l am, etc., AUTO.
