VIRGINIAN STRIKE OUTRAGES.
STIFF SENTENCES BY COURT. NEW YORK, February 25. The community of Wellsburg, West Virginia, has enforced justice in connection with the outrage committed by the miners on strike at the Richland Coal Company's mines early in July last. Seven persons were killed and 24 wounded in a clash with the authorities on the occasion named. The battle followed an attempt by a sheriff's party to halt 300 miners accused of burning the houses of loyal workers. The grand jury has now indicted 220 men for murder, conspiracy, etc. Only 47 were caught, and of these 43 pleaded guilty to conspiracy and were sentenced to three years' imprisonment. The remaining four were tried for murder and were found guilty. They were sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. The speedy action by the authorities has caused favourable comment throughout the country.— (A, and N.Z. Cable.)
