TENNIS TOURNEYS.

HEW ZEAJLAND 'CHAMPIONSHIP, j I PROGRESS OF THE GAMES. j (By Telegraph-Special to "Star"). HASTINGS, tlm day. Interest is increasing as each cliampion- ' ship nears its conclusion, and the chances are that many closely contested matches will be seen, as the best players win through to the fourth round and semi finals. The day was beautifully fine, although a merry nor'-west wind swept the couns, but did not occasion th-e players great difficulty. Tlie X*w South Walee ladiea' team are a fornridah'.e combination, and have continued the even tenor of their matah-winning wa}' all along the line. They have not up to th-e present sustained a einsite reverse in any championship. In a chat •with Miss Lance, she said: "Xo, we haven't had a single loss so far, but there is plenty of tim!> yet. To-morrow morning will be the hardest part. We like New Zealand very mudii, but the j weather for tennis is not so (rood. We ! play all th.? year round. The trip has bean delightful. We have on":y been over a fortnight and have been living in a dream." L. France had no difficulty in beatingSchadick in three straight set*. The W«st Coast terror could do nothing r-ijjht, and was playing a shocking game. The county engineer of Bullcr is not the man of fiv« years ago. and although only 24, carries a lnt of extra weight, and hae sacrifice 1 much of his former pace to style. France, playing indifferently, took the first set to love. The six-foot-thr«e man "-ot on to something like form in the next, and scored several fast cross-court placements, gaining four games. France ran away in the third set, and had five games in when Schadick opened hie account with two games before losing game, set and match. Miss Gray completely out«hone Mrs. Melody, (J—l, 6—o. B*>ing second only to Miss Xancy Curtis, it was thought that perhaps tie Wellington lady might extend the New -South Wales lady, but the hopes were sadly blighted. Miss Gray'e winning drives to the back line made it only a matter of time. By far .the most interesting match so far was in the ladies' singles, when a large crowd watched a great fight when ■Miss Lance successfully HtaveiT off Miss MnoFaxlane. The Auckland champion gained a commanding lead at s—l, by beautiful hard shots, grazing the side and iback lines. With wonderful equanimity Miss Lanoe set off after her, and the New South Wales girl took the next three games, fighting every inch of tbe w*y, but on the pfluy Miss MaoFarlane wag too good, winning the set, 6—4, off •her opponent's service. Misg Macfarlane bad been playing a. wonderful gam*, serving 'hard and driving equally well on either hand, and liad won *he set on her merits. Miss Lance, however, was wearing her opponent down, and after both winning service gamee Miss Lance forged ahead, winning a fast, exciting eet at o—2. Miae MacParlane was still playing -well, but began to tire, occasionally double falting, and often being a Kttle out in her drives. After winning the first game Md*» MacFurlane faded away, and Miss Lance dominated play, -iv inn ing the nest six games and the match. Idiurenson and Allison were hard" put •to beat Allieon and Wallace. The gam« wae exciting as the four men came up to volley, and some fine smashing was seen about the service line. The champions took first set at 7-5. but lost the next set, 4—6, some fine play by Wallace evoking the admiration of the crowd. (Allison proved th* weakest epot in a strong quartet. Laurenson and Otlivier got going strongly in the third set. romping home 6 —l. but a closely-contested fourth caueed them to go hard to win out at 7 —5. The Xew South Wales ladies sustained their first defeat when Mrs. lescelles and Parker went under to Miss MaoFarlane and Robson. Both ladies were playing well, tout the men were very patchy. Robson, however, picked up towards the end and the Auckland pair won out after a good close match, B—6, 4—6. 6—4. Mrs. Scott Watson and Miss Payton were too good for Misses Howe and Williams, after a long drawn-out two wrte. Play was mostly from the back lines, so that the rallies were prolonged and numerous. The Auckland ladiee ■were slightly the more solid combination, but were hard pushed to win, finally finishing victors 7 —9, 6—4, 6—l. Sims and Miss Lance -were far too hot a combination for Cowper and Miss Cato, and won 6—3, 6—l. Results:— MEN'S SINGLES. Third Round.—Hoblne beat Moir. e_2 3—6, 6—l, A—l; v France beat Scharick c—«..
