LED BY WOMAN.

DARING CHINESE PIRATES. Brigandage and piracy are rampant in China and one of their recent and most daring ventures was led by a woman. This is the story told by Mr. Percy J. Marks, a Sydney solicitor, who returned very recently by the Eastern from a trip to China and Japan. Mr. Marks visited Shanghai, Pekin, Canton and other places in China, and took a trip to the Great Wall. He found things in China very disturbed, and in the interior civil war and brigandage were raging. He would have liked to have gone to Pekin via Korea and Mukden, instead of direct from Shanghai, but the brigands had taken possession of the railway line, and torn up the rails. Several missionaries and others had been taken prisoners, and were being held to ransom. When Mr. Mdfrks was at Hongkong the chief topic was the daring piracy on the steamer Sui An. on her return journey, laden with tourists from Macao to Hongkong. A number of third-class passengers got on board at Macao, and when in a solitary part of the river, they took possession of the boat, killed two of the Indian guards, wounded several others, including the captain and several passengers, and took jewellery, clothing and money, to the value of atout 500,000 dollars. The pirates were led by a woman. Up to the time he left no trace of the robbers or their booty had been discovered.
