DROP IN CONSUMPTION. EFFECT OF HIGH PRICES. LONDON, October 22. The butter market is in an unsatisfactory- position. The optimism of a fortnight ago has disappeared, and many retailers are becoming nervous about stock they put aside during the summer to tide over the period of shortage they anticipated during October and November. High retail prices have checked consumption, which is now far below expectations.
