AVELCOiVrE TO CX»niISSIONER HOG CARD, •fVeoial gatherings \vcr<" held yesterday to -welcome (Dnrmissioner and Mre. Hoggard, the newly appointed leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand. The first meeting was in the morning at the Albert Street Barracks, the main functions being in th-e Town Hall, where gatherings were held in the afternoon nnd ■evening, wliLch were, attended by numbers outside the actual members of the Salvation Army. A pageant of welcome wus arrnnjred by Major Gutin for the afternoon meeting, when the various branches of tlu , activities of the. Army marched past, preceded by attractive banner* and mottoes. MY. R. A. I-dtidliiw, who presided, in welcoming lVmmi.-sk)iicr and Mrs. Ifoggard, referred to the jrreat prog Teas of the work of the Salvation Army since itfi incorporation 54 years ago. Mrs. Leo Cow-ie spoke on behalf of the Women's Christian Tcmjxjrance X'nion, and 'Mr. N\ R. Tuck on behalf of tlve N.Z. uMliance. The latter emphasised the fact that tho further doivn a man went the further down the Salvation Army tt-ould go to raise him. The Rev. H. Johnston, of Mt. Eden CongTe<rational Church, spolce on belialf of tlie Auckland Ministers' Association. In responding to the words of greeting. Commiseioner Hoprgard said they bad oome, to the Dominion with the same enthusiasm nnd hope tha.t animated them when they joined the Army over 40 years ago. The service was most enthusiastio throughout. Songs were given by a united choir of young people, and the girls from the <.; range Orphanage. Selections were also played by the massed bands, under Bandmaster H. Deighton. The service concluded with the National Anthoni. In tlie I'vi'iiing tlu?re was another large gathering, conducted t/y Staff Captain Bladin, when the Commissioner (lelivered n forcible address upon Paiil'a defence of the truth before Felix and Orucilla. Commissioner and Mra. Hoggard leave for Palmeretou 'North to-morrow.
