"SOB" STUFF. I am indebted to an Anglican clergyman for mv title. In the Auckland "Star" of October IK he is reported as expressing himself thus before that august and stately assembly, the Diocesan Synod of the Anglican Church of the Province »t Auckland in New Zealand: "He regretted that 'Sob stuff' and word pictures were put forward on the matter." i.e.. Prohibition. Having an intense and lively interest in the welfare of the people cfpial to that of any clergyman. 1. have consulted a first-class dictionary on the i meaning of the word -sob/" with tin following result: Sob. v.i., sobbed, sobbing. AngloSax. scoflan, to sigh: German, peufzen to sigh; Ellg. sough, to weep, with con ! vulsive 'catching of the breath, oxcitei! by mental emotion of si painful nature [ a short convulsive sigh. i I am in doubt as "to whether then ;is a vulgar meaning which the lcvrrcnc j gentleman may have wished to convej Iby this word, but of all the cxprcssivi ' pathetic words of the English languagi I he might have left this one to us in I pure sense. ' Yes, we Prohibitionists know all a'xm , i the "sob stuff." Like the reverend <ren ! tleman, our hearts ltnvp ached in nnisoi 1 with our Master's for the sobs of thosi Iwfco bave sobbed, lor the fob- of thos. i who are sobbing, and for the sobs o ! those who will sob. if the drink traffi jis permitted to continue its devastatin; !*nd destructive course. I As Christians we pray 1n have th "sob stuff" in our hearts, so that we c;u weep with those who do weep, as wel as rejoice with those who an- pr'ad. ; And the "sob stuff" Ik so potent with i in us that we dare to attack and lUvtro; I the biggest vested interest which m:i! | has instituted to deface and clpilru. i the Image of God in our fellow-men. : We hope to have the support of nl Christians and of the reverend gentle man himself, seeing that the Synod.
