MOUNT EDEN DESTRUCTOR.
THE MAYOR EXPLAINS. The Mayor of Mount Eden (Mr. .7. W; Shaekelford) was considerably heckled at the Empire Theatre, Dominion Road, last night, when he set out prior to Miss Melville's political meeting, to explain the situation in regard to the proposed erection of a destructor in the borough.
The Mayor strenuously denied that j there was any "star! chamber" or hole-in-1 the-corner procedure about the matter. ' The destructor was decided upon at a special meeting of the open council, and its minutes were approved of by a general meeting, at which "the councillor j who was making all the fuss" never' raised his voice in protest, though lie i had formally opposed the scheme at the special meeting. He (tlie Mayor) con-j tended that the destructor would be j harmless and a good investment, and i would not detract from the value of i neighbouring property —he had n property in Dominion Road almost adjacent.! The sum of €5000 was paid for the site.' (Loud howls from the rear). He pave! the name of the agent from whom it was ! bought, and said anyone could go there and inquire who got the commission.
