TRAMWAY TROUBLES.

THE WELLINGTON DISPTJTE. TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS. BOTH SIDES OF THE CASE. (By Telegraph. — Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. .-" The Wellington Tramways dispute ■came tiefore the Conciliation Council today, Mr. \V. Newton (Conciliation Commissioner) presiding. The union was cited by the City Council under the Arbitration Act, the position being that the council want the wages of tramwaymen to he tixed liy the Court in the same way as for other workers employed by the council. They wanted the 5/ a week reduction, as lixed by the Court, to apply to tramivaymen. and asked for alteration in tin , conditions. The union assessors contended that the council was asking for a greater redaction than •"> per week, saying that in some cases the decrease would amount to at least IS/. Mr. W. A. W. Grenfell, agent for the City Council, said he considered that the tramwaymen had no cause for complaint In being placed on the same level as other workers. The assessors for the union held that Mr. Grenfell, being secretary of the Wellington Employers' Association, had no right to express an opinion on behalf of the workers.
