WHITE ISLAND ACTIVE.
A MAGNIFICENT SIGHT. HUGE COLUMNS Of STEAM. (By Telegraph.—(Press Association.) WBAKATANE, this day. On Saturday White Island showed increasing activity. Yesterday was a cold, clear day, and the volcano was a magnificent sight, both craters sending up immense columns of steam. In the glistening radiance of sunlight snowy columns climbed two thousand feet in the air, combining to form a huge bank of white vapour that,' meeting a cross current, trailed slowly northward. The island was quieter this morning. A telegram from Tauranga states that a column of steam thrown up at 1 20 p.m. yesterday was measured by Mr. G. Arnold Ward with a theodolite, and reached the great height of 99S6ft. This is 600 ft higher than the highest previously recorded during 36 years of observation.
