A SIMPLE THING.
THAT DOES NOT INTEREST GOVERNMENT. (Bj Telegraph.—rariiamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The Minister of Justice was absent from the Chamber earlier in the week when the advisability of extending women's sphere to enable them to hold the position of Justice of the Peace was
advocated by all sides of the House, but when the matter was brought under his notice by Mr. J. McCombs to-day, he plainly showed that it was not his intention to recommend to the Government that any amendment be made in the Act. He replied that there was a large departmental file on the question, and the reason given from time to time was that in the opinion of the Crown Law Office the term "any person" in the Act did not include women. Mr. Wilford: That Act is forty years old. Mr. Lee: Ido not feel disposed to alter the Act. Mr. Sullivan: It is a very simple thing. Mr. Lee: Yes, it only means altering I one line, but it is not the present intention of the Government to alter it.
