A Christchurch commentary:—Brian McCleary hae had two lessons on the subject of treating an opponent too lightly and leaving himself open to the reception of & passport for Slumberland. He also bae learned that the referee is in charge of a fight, and that, even if he makes a mistake, the referee's decision stands. Will McCleary need another lesson?
Says a Hawlce'e Bay critic: "It seems a pity that Overend will not get the chance to contest the New Zealand title, for the writer is convinced that all things being equal, Purdy would find a hard job to get fche Terdict. However, the pair will probably be matched again in the near future, for the Na-pier Boxing Association is angling for them in a preliminary to the Hahnah-Gleeson fight It is probable that the bait will Vie bitten for both Purdy and Ovefend have signified their willingness to clasii again."
Jack Deropsey. besides being a renowned boxer, is a good speaker and ipossesses a keen sense of humour. During his repent visit to England he was entertained at luncheon in Cariton Gardens. London, by Viscount Xorthcliffe, together with a number of leading editors and sporting writers. Tn replyinsr to the toast of his health, Mr. Dempsey, who speaks extremely well, said: "I am very much in the position ot the Irishman who went to a party where everybody either had to make a speech, sin? a son?, teJl a story, or give a dance. The Irishman said. -'Gentlemen. I can neither make a speech, sing a sons, tell a etory, nor give a dancp. but I'll fight anybody in the room.'"
