THE CHURCH AND LIQUOR.
A CANON'S SUGGESTION. BREWERY FOR THE ALLIANCE.
BRISBANE, this day. Canon Cradwell, at the Anglican Synod, stated that half the drink trouble was due to temperance drinks, which were "faked." He suggested that temperance advocates should buy a brewery and retail cheap light ale as a step towards a. solution of the problem. The Synod passed a resolution that in view of the conflicting evidence of the working of prohibition a determined effort should be made to find a solution in the direction of resti _ting the hours for the sale. At Perth Archbishop Riley, giving evidence before the Licensing Commission, said the liquor trade should not be unduly taxed. He was perfectly amazed at the anonymous letters he received from temperance reformers advising him to go to hell to hear the shrieks of the damned because he refused to support prohibition. He suggested those desiring drink should secure a permit for a pound per annum. .(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
