BRITAIN'S TELEPHONES.
£35,000,000 FOR EXTENSION. AUTOMATICS TOO COSTLY.
(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, June 18. The House of Commons voted £15,000,----000 as part of a programme involving the expenditure of £35,000,000 for extension and reconstruction of telephones, laying lines underground, providing trunk cables and for new exchanges. Mr. F. A. Kellaway, Postmaster-General, declined to proceed with automatic exchanges, declaring the cost prohibitive.— (Reuter.)
