BILLIARDS.

A great amount of interest has been taken this season in billiards, the bracing, cold weather being a material factor. A number of billiard and snooker tournaments have been decided, principal of which was the Masefleld Cup. which was won by C. Roberts, who was on the 40 mark, in games of 500 up. The Amateur Sports Club championship commenced to-day. and If possible will lie finished during the week. The nominations comprise most of the best Auckland players in Messrs. WaTren. Jackson. Roberts, Hemus, Morrison, Matbias, Frcdatovich. Bowie. Russell, Dlggle, Hackett and Farrell. The preliminary heats are 500 up. with a final of 1000, and suitable trophies are provided for the winner and runner-up. On Monday. July .1. the amateur championship of Xew Zealand will be commenced in the Amateur Sports Club room, on a specially erected standard pocket match table, with bonzollne balls. The using of a neutral table should do much to invest the event with greater interest than In former years, when the club's ordinary table was used, and to an extent favoured the club members playing in the championship. No English professional player has visited Xew Zealand for a lengthy period, and the coming of 11. Stevenson <for whom several engagements have been made in this city) in the near future is being eagerly awaited. The Xew South Wales champion, A. Abotomey. is .touring tho Dominion, and Iris opening games at Wellington proved highly attractive. Mr. H. Seideherg, the bolder of the amateur championship of Xew Zealand, has announced his intention of defending his title this year. It says much for the sporting instinct of the crack that the journey from Dunedin will again be essayed, and the genuine amateur spirit shown is specially noticeable with this good sportsman.
