THE CANTEEN FUND.
ASSISTANCE TO SOLDIERS. LOAN'S FOR LOCAL BODIES. RECOMMENDED BY R.S.A. illy Telegraph—rrese Association.) W ELLLXGTOX. Sunday. The disposal of the New Zealand Expeditionary Korce canteen funds was discussed by the Dominion Council of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Satisfaction was expressed with the wide publicity given to the recommendations! of the in-21 conference to the- C'nnteen' Funds Disposal Hoard that the interest from the fund should bo applied to such objects as might best secure public re-, cognition by New Zealand of its paramount need for adequate naval defence. The special committee set up at the last meeting of the Dominion Council reported that in view of the decisions of the Washington Conference, it had no option but t 0 recommend the council to rescind the previous resolution re the application of the interest from the fund. Thus altered, Inst year's resolution was reaffirmed. The conference passed the following remits:—"That the present corpus of the canteen funds bo not dissipated until more pressing need for their expenditure by way of assistance to returned soldiers shall arise; that in view of the large amount of unemployment in the Dominion, the conference requests the Canteen Funds Disposal Board to take immediate stops to lend the board's available funds, on adequate security, to local bodies, on the understanding that such funds shall be used to provide work for unemployed returned soldiers, in reproductive works where possible; that the balance of the. canteen funds now in the hands of the <~tovernment, and not bearing interest, be forthwith hnnded over to the Regimental and Canteen Funds Trust Hoard: that
any attempt by the Regimental and Canteen Kunds Trust Board, or the Government, to transfer control of the canteen funds from the Regimental and Canteen Funds Trust Board' to the National War Funds Council, or any other body whatever, for administration, be strenuously resisted." Major Aldred (Waiuku) was appointed to the vacancy on the Canteen Funds Disposal Board.
