THE WOOD BORER. (Do—lesticus AncVbium.) The wood borer is a prolific pest in Auckland district, and the public are urged to do everything within their power to stamp it out. The borer is doing, and, indeed, is capable of doing much damage to good houses and furniture—the better the house or the furniture the more harm It can accomplish. before unwary people suspect what is happening. Of course, the borer is very active in the warmer summer period, but It is In the winter months of Slay. June, July and August, wheu least detected, that this pest Is actually at the height of its depredations. About October the insect Is in a chrysalis state, and It then emerges as a Hying beetle, laying its ominous eggs by the thousand. The young grub soon hatches and spreads to an alarming extent without being very visible. But It Is in the wiuter time when the grub is working into the timbers underneath the surface that the greatest harm is being wrought. That Is the time when sensible people, who discover any trace of the insect, should adopt efficient means of eradication. Otherwise the borer comes to light In the summer. ready to multiply and spread its injurious operations, and become a serious menace to house aud home. People who take a pride In their residences and furniture should realise that now is the opportune time to eradicate the pest from ITS EARLY STAGES Because the work of the insect is less visible at present it does not followthat the insect is not busy. It. is lively with a vengeance, as the warmer weather will reveal when the householder discovers die little brown specks of dust that coat the holes of the miscreant Insect. Often a person will observe a few of these holes in a floor or a piece of furniture, and will merely remark "Looks like the borer," but, as the outward evidences of the pest are trilling, will neglect to take any precautions. This is a foolish attitude, and amounts to sheer neglect. The little parasite will ultimately indicate that it Is too busy honeycombing the wood to be troubling the surface It will seek the llcht only when it becomes a beetle: by theu the mischief is already done. The logical method is to kill the borer, eggs and all. iv the winter. The very best and simplest measure for eradicating the borer is by thorough fumigating ami utilising the tine service offered by Blade's Patent Gas Fumigating Coin pany. This gas. which can be used to entire advantage upon lonises and furtiiture, is a certain destroyer of the bisect. It penetrates, powerfully into all timber. Into the finest cracks ami crevices and utterly destroys the borer, so that it will never return. People who observe the slightest sign of the insect should communicate right away with 'Blade's Patent Ons Fumigating Company, whose e-xperts will inspect houses and furniture free of cost, simply estimates, and advise exactly what is the best course to be taken. Indif- j ferenee to .the borer is wicked and I costly in the long run, and may become a veritable scourge If prompt measures are not taken. Do not wait until the summer: get busy and havp thp notorious ppst stamppd out as soon as possible the sootier the better for you and for the cominnnity at large BLADES PATE N T G A S FUMIGATING COMPANY. 3«.
