MAORI PRESENTATION
TO GENERAL RUSSELL. j (From Our Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, Wedneeday. • During the unveiling ceremony of the < returned soldiers' memorial on Anzac Day. Mr. Warahi Whiutahi and Mcc- 8 dames Te Kfrahi Te Ika Wairangi and '. Mata Hine Puku walked to the base of j the monument and placed thereon, in honour of the dead, a Maori taiaha and aute mat. Mr.'Whiutahi made a brief speech, which was interpreted by the Rev. J. E. Ward. Ivater these three well-known natives were introduced to the General, and they presented him with the taiaha and ] mat laid at the foot of the memorial. j The General, in returning thanks, mentioned that the Arawa tribe had ■ similarly honoured him, and assured the natives that he would treasure the gifts . from the Xgatihaua tribe for all time.
