N.S.W. SPEAKERSHIP.
BITTER DEBATE IN HOTTSE. (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The election of Mr. D. to the epeakership of the New South Wales Parliament waa responsible for a bitter debate. Mr. Wilson, in moving hia election, said he s wanted to deny the statement that the position was being given to Mr. Ljevy as a reward for hie action in stepping down from the chair anJ bringing about the dissolution of Parliament. Mr. Cfinn considered Mr. Levy had not proved himself an impartial Speaker. He had lowered the dignity of Parliament, and now was being given the position as part of a bargain. It was highly undignified that a man occupying the position of Sneaker should be carrying on business as a solicitor which carried him into the Police Court, where, doubtless he would be defending drunks and others charged with disorderly conduct. Mr. J. McGirr declared that Mr. Levy obtained nomination because he held documents which, if made public, would bring Sir Geo. Fuller and members of his Ministry down on their knees to plead for forgiveness. There were reasons why the other side did not dare to nominate any other man. He congratu-! lated Mr. Levy on being able to work I any Government in power. ] The majority of the speakers, includ-1 ing the leader of the Progressives and | Opposition members, spoke favourably! of Mr. Levy's qualifications. Sir George Fuller, in congratulating him. said that the Government supported him for one reason only, that they were picking out the one man above all others from what they knew of his actions in the chair, most capable of filling the position.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
