OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN P. LENNARD. VETERAN AUCKLAND SPORTSMAN. A gentleman well known in the sporting community, Mr." John Palmer Lennard, of Waihou, near Te Aroha, died this morning at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. H. Gladding, Epsom. Deceased is survived by his widow and adult family. It has _een arranged that the interment shall be at Te Aroha. Mr. Lennard had reached the ripe age of 80 years. It is over half a century •since he had his first experience of ownership of a racehorse, his mare Minnie Athol, by Potentate, winning a good many flat and hurdle races. It was this mare that won the first hurdle race at Parawai, Thames. Minnie Athol bred several winners of raeQs. One was Rifleman, which won the first and only Waikato-Derby at Ohaupo. Mr. Lennard afterwards started a small breeding stud and had good results. In 1890 Mrs. Lennard took over the horses and stud. When Mr. and Mrs. Lennard went to farm at Waihou. near Te Aroha, their sons took"over the stnd.
Mr. Lennard made many friends during his long residence in Auckland district. '
