ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTS.

KORTHCOTE AiNID BIRKENHEAD. The annual report of the Northeote District School Committee lor presentation to the householders this evening states that so far as the knowledge of the com- .' mittec extends, no definite action has been '• taken by the Education Department to ac- .' complteh the desired raising of the Birken- : bead side school to the statns of a main school and the constitution of Birkenhead as a separate school district. Consequently the overcrowding complained of last year had become accentuated tty the increased roll number. The committee possessed no . official knowledge of the result of the recent visit of the Minister of Education In -connection with these matters and that of acquiring an additional area of 2i acres of land adjoining the Birkenhead School. As ..the Birkenhead Borough Council was engaged upon consideration of a sewerage :; scheme, developments were being awaited :. with a view to improving the sanitation of : ■ the Birkenhead side school. The sum of ....£135 was raised hy voluntary effort for I the Birkenhead School library, "which was • augmented by the •Education Board subsidy 3 of a like amount, realising a total of f27°. The purchase of librarr books, piano, etc.. amounted to £350 2/u, leaving a balance due to the fund of £19 17/7 from the general j fund, to which it had been advanced. Owing to the generosity of Messrs. J. AY. Court • and B. Le Roy, a flagstaff and flag had been Installed at the -Birkenhead School. A vlgori ous campaign had been conducted for funds for the improvement of the Birkenhead School grounds, but the School Committee , had received no official or detailed information, and while not desiring to retard or discourage outside efforts for- the common weal, maintained that when such efforts were represented as being part of the ramifications of the (District School Committee, and made with a view to their financial results being subsidised by the Education Board, as special school funds, it was Only fair to demand that the School Committee be cognisant of all such proceedings, and . Its treasurer be kept supplied with financial developments. An effort by the Northeote Infant mistress, supported by the Women s • Progressive League, realised A3O towards accessary equipment at the Northeote side school, such as piano and flagstaff.
