OREWA BRIDGE.
In course of conversation with the chairman of tlie. Waitemata County , Council this morning reference -.vas made to the difficulties of local bodies in con--'Jnection with bridges on main roads. The opinion was expressed by Mr. Day that .Yuch bridges should be constructed abd .maintained by the Government. ~ An instance cited by the chairman was the Orewa Bridge, in respect Of which. the Public Works Department had notified the council that certain repairs must oe effected within 24 hours., "That bridge," said Mr. Day, "is near the boundary of • the Waitemata County, and is of more imjbortance to tourists than to residents in the district, yet our council is called upon to repair it forthwith. The riding has not the money to carry out the work. The bridge is 175 feet in length, and it will cost a lot to put it in repair, probably up to £1000. It is unfair for the whole of the county to be called upon to maintain a bridge that is lot the slighest use to the great proportion of the residents. I strongly hold that it would be well for main roads and bridges to be in the control of the Government." .
