The decrease of whitebait in the Wa.ika.to River was discussed by tbe council of the Auckland Acclimatisation - Society last evening. The chairman, ■' Mr. C. -A. Whitney, said that the council took i/p this matter some time ago as the result of certain applications to the Government to allow fixed and draw \ nets to be used to catch these fish. The society wrote to the Marine Department urging that there should be a close season during the year; also that no nets . other than handnets made from butter cloth should be used. In reply the . Secretary to the Department stated that reports received from the Department's officers were generally against j the imposition of a. close season, and the Department did not propose to take any action.
