On the recommendation of the Educational Committee the Council decided to purchase annually sets of English law reports. A motion of ..condolence with the relatives of the late Dr. Dean Bamford, who was a former student at the University, was passed by the Council, all members standing in silence. In a letter to the Council from Professor H. S. Dettmann, the urgent need for another lecturer in education was stressed. A report from Mr. H. GCousins stated that the work of the Training College had considerably increased, the total number of students on the roll being 352. The burden of work was accordingly pressing on the lecturers. The letter also stated that Canterbury "College had instituted a chair of education, which was filled by Professor Shelley. It was further pointed out that this year education became an honours course, but so far no provision had been made for the tuition of honours students. The chairman stated that it was high time that a chair of education was established at Auckland University College, and he suggested that the registrar and Mr. Cousins should draft a letter to "Mr. Caughley, the Director of Education. Brief discussion ensued, and it was decided to write to Mr. Caughley pointing out the present difficulties, and requesting that immediate steps be taken by the Department to relieve the situation.
