DEATH OF FALKENHAYN.

NOTED GERMAN GENERAL. (Receiveil 2.30 p.m.l LONDON, April 9. The death of General yon Falkcnhayn is announced. —(A. and X.Z. Cable.) Erich yon Falkenhayn was 61 years of age. He was one of the military clique that brought about the Great War. After the first battle of the Marne (September. 1914) he succeeded yon .Moltke as chief of tlie German general staff. He wae responsible for the first battle of Ypres (at the end of 1914). in which, according to his own account, he did not persevere because he believed that the English had large reserves. It was Kalkenhayn who prepared the great onslaught on Verdun, and his gigantic failure here shattered his reputation. After the failure the Kaiser took counsel of Hindenzurg. and Falkenhayn then asked to be relieved of his duties. In the autumn of 191(5 he commanded the Austro-German offensive against Rumania, and after the Rumanian resistance had been broken he was sent to command the Turkish-German armies in .Mesopotamia and Palestine, but arrived too late to affect the issue.
