WEEK-END ACCIDENTS.

FAI_ FROM BALCONY. 0»D-AC£ PENSIONER'S DEATH. SURFACEMAN'S HAND BLOWN OFF. Two accidents, one of which proved fatal during the week-end. In the first case, an old-age pensioner, Edward Hughes, aged 77 years, fell from a balcony at the Costley Home, where he had wandered unnoticed, and met with instantaneous death. Deceased was a native of Wales, and entered the institution in 1920. About a week ago he was confined to the infirmary ward. At an inquest conducted by Mr. W. R. McKcan S.M., a verdict was returned that death was due to dislocation of the cervical vertebrae caused by the fall.

The other accident took place about 4.30 yesterday afternoon at Weymouth, near Manurewa, a railway surfaceman named Charles Allen, aged 43 years, losing half of his right hand through a detonator exploding when it was bein" attached to a gelignite cartridge. Allan was attended by Dr. E. A. Bewes. of Papatoetoe, and admitted to the Auckland Hospital, where an operation was performed last evening. He was reported to-day to be doing as well a 6 could be expected.
