CONSTABLE USES A TAXI. (By Telegraph. — Fres- Association.) OAMARU, this day. Another smart arrest was effected in the vicinity of Oamaru late yesterday afternoon. Word was received by the local police from Dunedin that a man named Edward Stephen Laws (alias Thomas Hunter) who was wanted for theft of a savings bank book and on a charge of forging the owner's name on a withdrawal slip for £75, was believed to be journeying northwards. On leaving the police station shortly before 5 p.m. Constable Abel noticed a Dunedin taxi speeding past the station hound north. The constable gave chase in an Oamaru laxi,» and overtook the suapedt eight miles out of town. He found the man wanted. When he was searching the accused, the latter bolted, and 'jumped over a fence. The taxi man and the constable gave chase in the car, going clean through a hedge. Laws was quickly recaptured and lodged in the Oamaru lock-up. Accused is tw«nty-three years of age, and has a previous record over thirteen years. When arrected accused was smartly dressed and wore an expensive overcoat. He had also in his possession a fairly large sum of money.
