NARROW NECK CARNIVAL

j ■ I Narrow- Neck presented a pretty sight |on Saturday, when a village fair and ■ carnival, organised by the residents for the purpose of raising funds for improving and beautifying the Narrow Neck Reserve was held. Mr. H. S. W. King (Mayor of Devonport). in opening the function, congratulated the residents upon the enterprise shown, and trusted their efforts would meet with tbe de—red results. A splendid musical programme was rendered by the Devonport Boys' Brass Band, under Bandmaster Tatton. The trips in the spc-ed launch. Miss Masport, kindly placed at the committee's disposal, were run In tbe harbour, and were well supported. The rowing races were also held in the harbour, under the control or the North Shore Rowing Club. The many stall* and side shows did splendid business, while a large army of ticketsellers had little difficulty in extracting the humble shilling from the visituis. The residents have decided that. although their efforts have been greatly hampered by adverse weather, to bold another carnival when the weather is more settled. The races resulted:Primary Schools Championship. 100 Yards. —Massey (Devnnporti' 1. Hugger (Devonport) 2. A. Hamilton iNortbcote) 3. Girls' Three-legged Race. —Miss Nellie Millar and Miss Vera Sales 1. Tug-of-War.—H.M.s. Chatham beat H.M.s. Veronica's crew by 2 pulls. Light-weight Maidens (lOst and linden. - This race was rowed from the Calliope wharf to the Devonport wharf, the contesting crews being Waitemata and North Shore. From a good start Waitemata forged ahead, and piiKlng In a final effort, took the lead and crossed the line with au advantage of one aud a-half lengths.
