The New Plymouth Motor-Cycle Club's races were held this afternoon on the racecourse in fine weather. The attendance was about 3000. After rain the previous days the going was somewhat greasy. Five competed 1 in tho race for tlie New Zealand Motor-Cycle Middle-weight Championship. When the third of ten laps was being negotiated. Maugham and Coleman were level, with Sykes close behind. The leading pair raced neck and neck for five laps, while Sykes gradually moved up. When he was just In front of the grandstand, however, the forks of his hicycle broke, and the rider was thrown high into the air. and turned two or three somersaults. The crowd became silent, but there an—ety was relieved, and loud applause broke out when Sykes .jumped up and ran to the side of the course unhurt by his mishap. Meanwhile. Maugham had gained a slight advantage of Coleman, and victory was made sure for him by his opponent being compelled to steady down owing to the handles of his machine twisting.
