CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THREE TEAMS EQUAL. DAY OF LOW SCORING. I'WU-POINT WINS THE RULE. SHORE BEATS PONSONBY. The continuation of the games com- I nienced a fortnight ago provided nothing i .it all sensational for the spectators at ! Eden Park. Remuera. and North Shore I i>n Saturday. Scoring generally was | rem—rkably slow. I The results on Saturday make an , Interesting position. Grafton, Parneil, j and North Shore all being equal in the I lead, with seven points each. Eden A j are next with six points. Ponsonby have one point to their credit. University sro minus 5, Eden B minus S, and V.M.C.A. last with minus 15. The wickets at Eden Park were described by batsmen as being easy, yet tha : scoring was both very slow and very j low. The green was drying well, with the consequence that the later batsmen were more favoured by cireumstanc" than were those who defended their wickets earlier in the afternoon. On No. 1 wicket at Eden Park Eden A secured their two-pointer over Parneil, though they' failed in the effort to increase their" win to a three-pointer. Parneil completed the first innings for 131 against Eden A's 162, which the home team followed with 223. They thus won with two points. A similar result occurred on the No. 2 wicket, where Universit3' (four wickets for 106) finished their innings for 133, just over half of Grafton's 260 compiled on the first day of the match. And the students' chances of getting the required 128 runs in their second effort looked very bad when R. Garrard and Saunders made a good seventh-wicket partnership, building up the score and refusing to be shifted for an - hour and a-half. The innings ended almost on time at 144 runs. On the Remuera ground Eden B also won a two-pointer, defeating V.M.C.A. by 15 runs on the first innings, the game being uncompleted at the call of time. The game between North Shore and! Ponsonby, played at Devonport, was full; of excitement, and ended in a three-point j victory for North Shore by three wickets and four runs. The home team wiped off the 70 runs required to overtake Pon-! >onby's first innings total, and carried their score to 214. In the visitors' second innings C. Dacre proved very destructive ! on the treacherous wicket, and they were all disposed of for 84, leaving North Shore the task of compiling 48 for a three-pointer. They lost seven wickets in accomplishing their object. EDEN A V. FARNT-LL. With five of the ten wickets down and just orer half of the 163 runs required to defeat Eden A on the first innings, Parneil continued their strike on No. 1 wicket at T.den Park. But they had the disadvantage • •!' u-oius first to a drying wicket, and whether it was thi_ cine—l—Stance or whether the Parneil batsmen were not altogether up to previous form (probably a little of botbr" they did not succeed in getting the 80 runs they needed. 131 was the result of the funings, and tbe men of Eden A filled in the remainder of the afternoon in compiling 223 for a second iunUigs, that was completed rieht on time. The best of their batting was Bennett 69 not out, and Whe—.tt l.b.w. ,"H3, while at the top of Pa—ell's •bowling Moore with ftor wickets for 43 runs. Scores were:— EDE* A. Eden B secured a win on the first innings by 15 runs in their match with V.M.C.A., which team compiled 146 in the initial .strike, their opponents responding with 161 ; in their second innings on Saturday afternoon Eden B put up a fairly solid front, -unning ou 106 runs. Postles, in a valuable innings, accounting for 87 against the full bowling strength of the V.M.C.A. trundJers. V.M.C.A. played out time, losing three wickets for 75 runs. The uncertainty of cricket was fully demonstrated in the Ponsonby-Shore fixture, for even though it was anticipated that the home team, with six wickets in would knock off the 79 runs necessary to pass Ponsonby's first Inning's total, It was hardly anticipated that they would get a three-point victory. Though Shore carried their score to 214, there was always a doubt whether they would reach their opponents 177. A partnership between Scott and Bottrell took the score to 162 before Scott's (the seventh) wicket fell. There were still some anxious moments in tbe eighth wicket partnership, but a big hit for six by Doble settled the matter. The innings did not last much loger, and then Ponsonby went in again, but they could do nothing on the treacherous wicket. In a little over an hour they were all disposed of for S4, C. Dacre getting eight wickets for 3_. Included in this performance was the hat trick; in fact the Shore trandier took four wickets In the over. After having a catch missed otr Roberts he' clean bowled that "batsman next ball, the second of ths ever.

and with his fourth, fifth and sixth balls accounted for Elmbranch, Leikis. and Parke?. When Short went in to bat again about •" | o'clock they wanted only 48 runs for a three- ] pointer, but this apparently easy task proved much more difficult than anticipated, and it took seven wickets to get the runs. It was a coincidence that the eighth wicket partnership got Shore the advantage iv both innings. - and singularly enough it was a six-stroke that • placed Shore ahead in each innings. L. The University batsmen made very poor success of the f : Grafton bowlers, of whom Allcott was easily ! the most successful. The Grafton fielding , was very keen at the beginning, but faded ; ! away a little towards the end of the day. j , There seemed to be very little hojie for Cni- ! versity when R. Garrard (52) and Saunders I j (47). with a splendid, though not altogether j I chanceiess partnership, staved off the antici- | • pa ted three-pointer, and enable:! ihelr side ;<> i play out time. This made nue of those turns j of fortune that characterise all games, anil, i truth to tell, it was the only interlude in the I i afternoon's play that approached liveline.s at all, at anyrate so far as the batsmen and the spectators were concerned. AUcott's bowling average of four for 41 in the first innings, and four for 36 in the second making eight for 77 on the game, is a distinctly good one. especially as he was bowling for the major portion of the game.
