a THRILLING SPORT AT TAKAPUNA. ONE MILE WORLD'S RECORD ESTABLISHED. On Saturday afternoon on the Takapuna Jockey Club's course at Takapuna the third annual meeting of the Auckland Motor Racing Club was held, over 7000 people attending to witness the thrilling contests. The club was favoured with flne weather, i but a fairly strong southerly wind and a holding track kept the times down a little. Taking this Into consideration some of the times 'registered were remarkable. Whitehead winning tbe Takapuna Handicap of 7 miles and 70 yards in 6.30, while his time for the 13-!ap Great Northern Handicap was 13.10. During the afternoon S. Whitehead, riding a new racing model 7-0 h.p. Excelsior, lowered the world's one-mile flying wtart grass track record of 49 3-5* held by Percy ■Coleman. 'Whitehead and Maugham -both lowered the record by one-fifth of a second, but in a second attempt Whitehead cut the time, down to 49 1-sb. which now constitutes the world's record. Coleman did not attempt to lower his own record, as he cracked one of his cylinders in the Great Northern Handicap. By their daring cornering L. Hangham, S. Whitehead and P. Coleman kept tue large crowd thrilled, and established themselves as the three best riders in the Dominion. The results were as follows:— EIGHT-MILE HANDICAP, for «00 c.C. machines. R.
