ENGINEERING WORKS CLOSED
1500 MEN THROWN IDLE. EFFECT OF BASIC WA6E. (Received 11.30 a.m.i SYDNEY, thia day. The whole employees of the Clyde Engineering Works, totalling 1500, have been dismissed, and the works will be closed owing to the effect of the basicwage. The manager explained that a contract had been undertaken for the construction of 300 locomotives for £2,500,----000. The first 30 had been completed at a cost considerably in excess of the estimate, aud the company was unable to continue unless the Government came to its assistance.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) BIG COKE WOBKS IDLE. (Kercircd 12.30 p.m.; SYDNEY, this day. Owing to the accumulation of large stocks of coke two-thirds Of the employees at Mount Byell coke works at Kenibla are being paid off.
