TWO FOOLISH YOUNG MEN.

SEQUEL TO DISHONEST CONDUCT. 'It ia of little use to attempt to live a lifo of dishonesty," said his Honor, Mr. Justice Herdman, at the Supreme Court, in addressing one of two prisoners who came up for sentence. The accused youth was James Donaldson (Mr. Osburne Lilly), who had been found guilty of obtaining £7 from a marine dealer by false pretences, his story being that lie was going to buy a large quantity of empty bottles from a ship.

Lfis Honor said he would give Donaldson a chance. Prisoner had only one previous conviction, that being for breach of peace. .He would be put on probation for two years, and make restitution and pay the costs of the prosecution. SHIP'S OFFICER IX TROUBLE.

Only 24 years of age, a good-looking ing and well dressed, a young man named Hugh Arthur Julian (Mr. A. H. Johnstone) stepped into the dock for sentence on a charge of having obtained three sums, amounting to £S 2/6, by false pretences. Mr. Johnstone said Julian belonged to Taranaki and was of very respectable parentage. He had gone to sea as a youth and had risen from "man before the mast" to be third officer. He was now undergoing three months' imprisonment for obtaining money at Christchureh and' Wellington, his crime in Auckland being part and parcel of the same line of conduct, and being the first of the misdeameanours. His Honor said the offences seemed to be mixed up together. As the accused was already serving a term of imprisonment he would merely record a conviction and order him to come up for sentence if called upon. He would also make restitution.
