CHARGE OF ARSON.

In the Magistrate's Court Eric Randolph Chamberlain was committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of arson. The police said accused had been keeping a greengrocer's shop at Kilbiniie, and found some difficulty in making the business pay in face of Chinese opposition. It was alleged that he purchased a tin of kerosene, and carbon the following morning the shop of n Chinese rival was found to be on fire. When the fire brigade arrived they found the door of the Chinese shop saturated with kerosene. Accused, it was stated in evidence, made a statement to the police that he set fire to the shop as he was unable to compete with the low prices of the Chinaman, and devised this means of disposing of a rival.

Accused, however, now pleaded not guilty.
