AUSTRALIA'S LAST MATCH.

THORNTON'S XI. SCORES 280. GOOD LAST WICKET STAND. AUSTRALIA NONE FOR SO. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, September S. The weather was glorious and the wicket good and fact for the Australians' last match, against Mr. C. I. Thornton's Eleven at Scarborough. The attendance was large. Gregory, who is suffering from a bad knee, and Carter and Mayiie did not play for Australia, while Pellew was twelfth man. ( Play was interesting, and generally marked by freshness, sujzeesting rather the beginning than the end of the tour. The crowd was enthusiastic over the crisp batting and attractive fielding. Sandham and Rhodes opened to McDonald and Armstrong. Both batsmen were in good form and hit several boundaries. Mailey relieved McDonald with the score at 23, and at 28 Rhodes stopped one from Armstrong with his leg. Hearne was next in, and before the half-century was reached Hendry and McDonald were put on. Runs tamt freely till Hearne gave Oldficld a chance. Two for 84. McDonald's second over proved fatal to Mead, and Woolle\ joined Sandham at 93. The century appeared in 110 minutes, and the pair provided an attractive, lively partnership, adding 47. Then McDonald found Sandham'o wicket. Hcndren was content with a "couple. Five for 143. At this stage there were some quick bowling changes. Woollcy was dismissed by a smart catch by Mailey after the ball had rebounded off Old'lield's pads. At U8 Fender lost his wicket in trying a big hit. Seven for 156. Douglas and Jupp were confident and brisk, and were not deterred by variations in the attack. Jupp escaped stumping ofT Mailey when 17, but three runs later a second similar chance was accepted. Eight for 195. Hitch was going well, including three consecutive fours off McDonald, and then made a mishit and was caught at mid-on. Nine for 222. Douglas made 50 in 00 minutes, and the last wicket partnership waa interesting, adding 54 in half an hour. Douglas went out in making a big hit. He was slow in starting, but when he warmed up was good and sound. The crowd greeted him with "C!ood old Johnny.'' With forty minutes to go Australia's opening pair, Bardsley and Collins, kept their wickets intact against the bowling of Fender and Hitch, stumps being drawn with the score at none for 30. C. I.
