GIANT TELESCOPE MADE. MAGNIFIES 25,000,000 TIMES. LOXDON\ September 7. Utilising Chanaral, in Chile, as an observation station. Mr. B. McAfee, an American millionaire scientist, and Professor Todd, of Harvard University, intend in 1924 to study liars to determine -whether there is intelligent life on the planet An enormous telescope is being constructed. Mr. McAfee has dispensed with a glass mirror, and has substituted his mm invention, a ttat dish, 50ft in! diameter, in which merenry will be poured and rotated at a certain speed, j the surface of the mercury thereby | assuming the necessary concavity, and forming a splendid mirror. The total magnification of tne telescope will be 2.1,000,000. This will bring the surface of Mars, which is ."3.000,000 miles airav, within about one and a-half nrile of the observers. During 1924 Mars on three occasions trill be nearer the earth than at any other time for a century.— (U.S.)
