PRISONERS SENTENCED.
PROBATION IX THREE CASES. At the Supreme Court to-day three prisoners tame before Mr. Justice Adams for sentence. One charge of breaking and entering and five charges of theft were admitted ■by John McLean, a miner, of Waihi. Mr. Cahill, on the prisoner's behalf, said the offences were committed under the influence of drink. They were purposeless and foolish, and did not disclose the presence of criminal tendencies. It was true that McLean had not fulfilled his duties towards his wife and children as well as he might have done, but that also was due to drink. He suggested probation would meet the case. Mr. V. R. Meredith, for the Crown, agreed that liquor was the trouble. His Honor agreed to place the prisoner on probation for a period of three year<. one-condition being that. McLean should abstain from intoxicating liquor. MAORI BOYS ON PROBATfOX. Two young Maori boys from Whangarei. William Edward Heta ami Leon Heta, who admitted one charge of breaking, entering, and theft, were placed on two years' probation. His Honor said that the older l>ov had been favourably reported upon, but the younger lad had not been a verygood boy: he had refused to live in his home, and he had not subjected himself to his parents as a good boy ought. However, his Honor would take a little risk with him, and admit him to probation.
